Surgical and Anesthetic Information

To make your pet's anesthetic procedure as safe as possible, our doctors and surgical staff would like you to read and understand the following information regarding pre-anesthetic laboratory work and evaluations.

Pre-Surgical Examination

Your pet will receive a complimentary* examination by the attending veterinarian to determine if your pet is healthy enough to undergo the prescribed surgical procedure(s).

*Registered Patients Only

Pre-Operative Bloodwork

Your pet will receive one of the following lab tests to determine his or her health and ability to handle anesthesia as well as to choose the best form of anesthesia and surgery for your pet's individual needs.

Healthy Pet Under Five Years of Age

Packed Cell Volume (Hematocrit), Total Protein, Kidney Function (BUN)

Healthy Pets Five to Eight Years of Age

Complete Blood Count (CBC), Kidney Function (BUN), Blood Sugar (Glucose)

Pets Over Eight Years of Age

Complete Blood Count (CBC), Complete Organ Chemistry Profile, Electrolytes

Preoperative Electrocardiogram

An EKG can help to detect heart disease that is not apparent on physical exam.  Silent heart disease has the potential to cause complications while your pet is under anesthesia.

IV Catheter/Fluid Therapy

This therapy will keep your pet hydrated during the procedure, and will compensate for any blood loss.  In addition, during any anesthetic emergency your pet's blood pressure may drop quickly.  The IV catheter gives the doctor a direct line to administer life-saving treatments should this happen.

Post-Operative Pain Relief Injection

A pain injection will assist in ensuring your pet's comfortable recovery.

Laser Option

Use of a laser reduces trauma to tissue that can be caused by a scalpel.  The laser cauterizes nerve endings and blood vessels as it cuts, which reduces pain and risk of infection, and speeds recovery.  The laser may be used for your pet's procedure if the surgeon determines it is medically appropriate.

Optional Procedures--Microchip Identification

We offer insertion of a painless, permanent identification system by placement of a microchip beneath the surface of your pet's skin.  This chip identifies your pet directly to you and three emergency contacts including your veterinarian.
