At Millhopper Veterinary Medical Center, we want you to know how important it is to walk your pet. Both you and your pet should try to get out of the house and go for some walks. Here is some information you will want to know about walking your pet.
We are now a couple of months into dreary weather and cold temperatures. Your pet can get cabin fever and wants to go out. And many people make a resolution to get fit and exercise more during the New Year. Walking your pet helps you to keep your resolution while also getting your dog some needed exercise and some much needed fresh air.
There are many benefits to walking your pet. You help to prevent your pet from becoming bored. You help to ensure your pet gets exercise and you help to control your pet's weight. Taking your pet for a walk also helps to socialize the pet, as they become familiar with seeing other animals and people.
Walking your pet when it is cold outside can be tricky. It is best to walk your pet during the warmest part of the day. Be sure to place booties on their paws if the ground is frozen or if salt deicers are used. If your pet has short hair, consider putting a sweater on them as well to keep them warm. After your walk is over, dry off their feet and moisturize their pads to help prevent blistering due to the cold.
Walking your pet is good for your health and theirs. In addition to regularly walking them, you will want to ensure that they have a yearly check-up with a vet. If it has been a year or longer since your pet last had a check-up, now is a great time to schedule one.
Call Millhopper Veterinary Medical Center at (352) 653-2206 to schedule an annual exam for your pet today.
